Butterworth's beaches

Sea shells, sand castles and windswept leisure for all

The state of Penang is famed internationally for its beaches which draw tourists from far and wide. A point to note is that all these well-known shores are located on the island. Not many outsiders and islanders are aware that there are beaches on mainland Seberang Perai, especially along the Butterworth coastline, that are equally attractive and resplendent.

In particular, three public beaches – all accessible within fifteen minutes’ drive from Butterworth town – stand out. Because they do not suffer from hordes of tourists such as those inundating the popular beach areas on the island, these little-known coastal spots have retained more pristine and serene atmospheres notable in this part of Penang.

Pantai Bersih has been known as an idyllic picnic and swimming spot among locals for many decades. The beach at the Bagan Ajam R&R centre is much more recent, having emerged on the reclaimed land around 2006. It is therefore incredibly unspoilt, with a clear sandy shoreline, sparkling water and a panoramic view of Penang island with its green hills and pretty skyline. And Pantai Robina is a charming place for relaxation with its shady seafront promenade and park that bring a sense of nostalgia of what Gurney Drive on the island used to be once before it started becoming commercialised.

Penangites are very familiar with popular beachside recreational sites for the public in several urban areas on the island. They know of Gurney Drive, the Esplanade, Karpal Singh Drive and Queensbay. Few people, however, are aware of Pantai Robina on the mainland.
